Dr. Alphonsa Rahman

A year-long struggle with the brutal pandemic is drawing to a close within the United States. More of us are receiving our COVID-19 vaccinations with each passing day, and there is hope for a return to normalcy in the near future. Just as we finally started to rejoice, the COVID storm shook our motherland India. Furthermore, even as we struggle with resource scarcity and an over-burdened healthcare system, we are also under siege by vaccine hesitancy, misinformation, and mistrust.

Let us be clear: the only way to end this disaster is by getting vaccinated, being socially and patriotically responsible, and trusting science. It is our responsibility to educate and encourage all our families and friends in India to get vaccinated, take all the necessary precautions, and follow the guidelines to defeat this vicious virus. Let us do our part to stop the spread of COVID-19 here in the United States, in our motherland of India, and around the world!

Thank you and appreciate all you do during these difficult times!

Shanti Bhavan Project

Have you heard of the organization Shanti Bhavan? You may have heard of it if you’ve seen the Daughters of Destiny Netflix documentary!

Shanti Bhavan is a non-profit organization founded by Abraham George, a successful Malayalee-American businessman and philanthropist. The non-profit is based in Bangalore, India and empowers children from India’s lowest socioeconomic class to break the cycle of generational poverty through education, leadership, and compassion. The school annually enrolls 12 boys and 12 girls for its incoming preschool class and guides them during the 14 years at the residential school and beyond.

This organization helps children become authors, engineers, medical professionals and more not only in India, but in the U.S. and around the world. Kairali of Baltimore Youth Committee is excited to support Shanti Bhavan by organizing fundraising events to collect funds for this incredible cause.

Kairali Conversations

On April 18th, Kairali of Baltimore’s  women's forum successfully conducted the second session of Kairali Conversations. The session was moderated proficiently by Dr.John Kadavil, Clinical Pharmacologist for the FDA. The topic of conversation was "workism" and "You are not your work".  This was yet another well attended session and there was a lot of enthusiasm among the members in sharing their thoughts and opinions related to the topic.  The attendees shared their experiences in relation to the concept of "workism" especially as it relates to one's identity and life's purpose. There were great points raised about how a meaningful work can contribute to a meaningful life, without sacrificing meaningful relationships.

Stay tuned for the upcoming session in May'21. Details to follow.

Women’s Forum Wellness walk  - Centennial Park

April17: we successfully completed our second family walk at Centennial Park by doing a 2.5 mile Lake Loop walk. Weather was fantastic, nature was present in all her beauty as we walked by flowering trees , streams and mini waterfalls and we even got to see a family of deer having their breakfast! The best part of the walk was spending time with our Kirali family . Hope to see you on May 15 when we will walk the NCR trail.
